On Narrow Mindedness

There is something that came to my attention recently and it's surprising, coming from the respected person that thought of such abomination: doubling foreign films instead of subtitling them. I stayed in countries where films were doubled and most people didn't even know basic English, they didn't know how De Niro's voice sounds, they didn't know lines that changed the world's perspective on some ideas, such as the Terminator's "I'll be back". If you want your films doubled, double them, but don't force the whole country stand YOUR idea of a movie night. If YOU cannot concentrate to read subtitles, have someone translate the movie for YOU, because trust me, most people have no problem reading subtitles. Don't assume that everybody is thinking like YOU.

So, you think that the integrity of our language is being tresspassed by the use of English? Talk in Romanian, don't force everybody to go by YOUR views. Dictatorship much? How about music? Will you ask for all the songs from famous singers to be doubled, as well? Will you ask Led Zeppelin to be doubled? How about opera? Come on, double that as well, maybe Latin is also interfering with our oh-so Romanian legacy. There are so many words taken from other languages and yet YOU think that Romanian's power is being threatened by the airing of foreign movies in their ORIGINAL status.

Make us a narrow minded country, as if we aren't enough...as if there aren't so many of our own already who laugh at anything foreign and who are so proud to say that they never visited a foreign country. Make us think that by enjoying a film or speaking a foreign language, we aren't patriotic anymore. Do you want to talk about patriotism? Patriotism means respecting your country and NOT rejecting multicultural exchange. If you want this, stop trying to promote our national food to other countries, forbid people to speak foreign languages. Let's see how your kids will communicate outside of this country. Oh wait, you forbid them to go there.

It's people with such caveman mentalities that will laugh at the "ephemerality" of a person's drawing on the street and not perceive it as an act of creation, a hobby, like the creation of a new, improved culture, from many languages and ideas. It's laws like this that make me be ashamed to say that these people have the right to decide for us.
